Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Noke Effect?

The Noke Effect is a fundraising challenge that encourages alumni to come together and support Roanoke College. The goal is to increase alumni participation by challenging alumni to make 500 gifts within a designated time frame. The Noke Effect will kick off on Giving Tuesday, November 28th at 12:01 am.

What is alumni participation, and why does it matter?

Alumni participation is a measure of the number of alumni who give each fiscal year (July 1 to June 30). Alumni participation is important because it is a vote of support in one’s alma mater. Many national rankings use alumni giving as part of the calculation for ranking the Best Colleges and Universities. If alumni give, it is an indicator to other foundations and major donors that Roanoke is a worthwhile investment for their gifts. And most importantly, it strengthens Roanoke and helps ensure that the College will be here for future generations.

Who will benefit from the money raised during The Noke Effect?

Students! 85% of Roanoke College students receive some type of financial assistance. Every aspect of what makes Roanoke a great college is supported by the Roanoke Fund. These gifts help to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Roanoke education.  Roanoke Fund gifts help strengthen academic programs, enhance student life, help to recruit and retain top-notch faculty, support scholarships, equipment for our athletic teams, technology for classrooms, resources for research, books for the library and so much more.

Can I direct my gift to a different area of campus or a specific department?

Yes. Gifts to any area of campus will count in The Noke Effect and help with the alumni participation rate.  Feel free to designate your gift to the area that means the most to you.  During the The Noke Effect, you can visit www.roanoke.edu/nokeeffect and specify where you would like to make an impact.

Is there a minimum donation amount?

No. Gifts of any amount make an impact.

Can I make multiple gifts?

Yes; however, you can only be counted once as a donor in The Noke Effect challenge. If your spouse is also an alum, both of you count.

Can I make a gift by phone?

Yes, you may call 866-RCGIVE1 or 866-724-4831 during regular business hours to make your gift over the phone. If you do not reach a representative immediately, please do not leave credit card information in a voicemail. You may leave your name and number and we will gladly call you back.

Is it safe to make my gift online?

Yes. The information collected during the challenge is only used by Roanoke College. It will not be sold to or shared with any third-party.

Is my Noke Effect contribution tax deductible?

Yes. Your gift is tax deductible. You will receive an email confirmation when making your gift. You will receive a separate acknowledgement letter and receipt for tax purposes.

I made a gift! How else can I help?

Spread the word. You can help us reach out to alumni by sharing your favorite videos and/or posts from Roanoke College’s Facebook and Instagram pages on your personal social media outlets. Challenge other alumni to be part of the Noke Effect.

Do I have to make a donation in order to post a message?

No. Spreading the word about the challenge still helps the College. Be sure to use the hashtag #NokeEffect on your social media accounts, and make sure your privacy setting allows everyone to see your post. Roanoke may even share your posts.
